2006 Policy Briefing - November 29, 2006

Dozens of Missouri's leading child advocates, representatives of child-serving agencies and government officials gathered in Columbia on November 29 to discuss recent developments and plans for the upcoming legislative session related to children's health care, early care and educaton and child protection.

Speakers included:

  • Noel Bravo, senior associate with the Center for the Study of Social Policy;
  • Joel Ferber, managing director of Legal Services of Eastern Missouri;
  • Gretchen Berhorst, supervisor of the Early Childhood Division of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education;
  • Jane Callahan, public policy manager for Parents as Teachers National Center;
  • Jim Caccamo, director of the Department of Early Learning, Metropolitan Council on Early Learning;
  • Kevin Drollinger, executive director, Epworth Children and Family Services;
  • Carmen Schulze, executive director, Missouri Coalition of Children's Agencies;
  • Catherine Martarella, policy director, Citizens for Missouri's Children; and
  • Beth Griffin, executive director for Citizens for Missouri's Children.

The lunchtime keynote speaker was Rachel Klein, deputy director of health policy for Families USA, who spoke about the upcoming work in Congress to reauthorize the SCHIP program.

An afternoon session with state legislators was cancelled to to bad weather across the state.
