Advocate for Programs and Policies to Benefit Children
In the broadest sense, an advocate must educate his or her community about the importance of the issues and programs for which they seek support. To be an effective advocate, you must:
- LEARN who your legislators are, their committee assignments, their legislative interests and records. Information on state, local and federal elected officials is available from Project Vote Smart.
- BE FULLY INFORMED about the legislative process and issues/legislation affecting your programs. Learn about the Missouri Legislative Process from the Missouri State web site.
- CREATE a continuing relationship with your legislators and their staff members.
- Visit their offices at least once a year.
- Include them on your mailing list.
- Invite them to visit and experience your program in action.
- Visit them when the legislature is not in session.
- Invite them to serve on your advisory council or board of directors.
- KEEP YOUR LEGISLATOR INFORMED about the issues which affect your programs, as well as program evaluations that show the effectiveness of your program. Learn how to effectively communicate with legislators with CMC's tips for advocates.
- REINFORCE the assistance and support your receive from legislators with letters of thanks, honors and award, and political support.
- COORDINATE advocacy efforts with other groups. Utilize their resources, bill tracking services, and educational opportunities.
- ALERT the board members and staff of your organization on the status of related issues and bills.
- ENLIST the help of other interested persons through letter writing campaigns and other community based efforts.
- PARTICIPATE in local political events to raise awareness of your issues. Use the upcoming election to raise visibility for your programs. Contact candidates with information on your programs, attend candidate forums, ask questions, and vote.
